Straight photoshop from a reference. 8.5″ x 11″.
Each one of these took about 15 minutes a piece. The goal is to understand the planes of the face.
These are very loose and try to show how little detail you need to have a convincing face.
The one in the upper left is a study done from one of Jon Foster’s sculptures. The way it was
lit was a dream to paint. The rest of the portraits were hijacked from Flicker, provided they were lit
pretty well. -Z
Drawing in 3B pencil on thick Cougar paper. Color in Photoshop CS3.
Still trying to figure out how to draw. Had an enormous revelation upon discovering
Beth Cavener Stichter. Here’s the bunny I blatantly copied from her. I want to draw the
way she sculpts. Another huge influence is J.C. Leyendecker (if you couldn’t tell). Love
how they both exaggerate FORM. -Z
Pencil sketch. Watercolor on 500 Series Bristol, 4 ply. 11.5″ x 7″.
I’ve been craving to do a traditional piece for a very long time. (They just feel so good.) Being very comfortable with a wacom and photoshop, I’ve been absurdly nervous about playing with paints.
Failing doesn’t feel that good. This past June, I was cornered into doing a fully traditional piece.
I had a very special opportunity to go to the IMC, the Illustration Master Class in Amherst, headed
by the lovely Rebecca Guay. I was given the opportunity by Brian Bowes, whom I’m very thankful to.
This is the piece I made there. Some of the venerable people that I got to spend the week with were
Donato Giancola, Rebecca Guay, Irene Gallo, Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell, Charles Vess, Scott Fisher,
Dan Dos Santos and Greg Manchess. This opportunity has been exceedingly valuable. -Z
