Oil on Ampersand Gesso Board. 12″ x 16″

First oil …almost. I had a brief accidental collision with oils this summer during IMC.
After nearly a 2 year wait, Andy, my atelier teacher, finally felt I was ready to paint.
This was a highly anticipated event. This is a 3 hour long alla prima done with
raw umber and black. Using the wipe out method, painted on Ampersand Gesso board.
I’ve been dreaming about painting. My first time felt really remarkable. Also reading
Alla Prima by Richard Schmid which is getting me even more excited. -Z

  1. I’ve been following your comic for a while and I love the artwork and various sketches posted on this blog. I just want to say congrats on your first oil painting. I haven’t even tried one yet; the medium scares me, and I HAVE plenty of paints both inherited and as a Christmas present! I think I’d have to do it under the tutelage of some wise artist, such as you yourself did. Lovely painting! I’m a little jealous. :-D

  2. Really beautiful! I hate to resort to comparisons but it reminds me of Rick Berry. When I was in painting class I’d see oil paint whenever I closed my eyes.

  4. Lovely! I’m glad you’re getting a chance to play more. I still use what you taught me about blocking in shapes and paying attention to light and dark.

  5. So fun! Your enthusiasm is contagious! I like how you are keeping it simple and not doing too much color or over labored modeling. the path to greatness…
