When Baba Yaga was young and her hut had yet to hatch, she entertained a different suitor every day, from the North Wind to the Green Man of the forest. Each one more handsome than the last and certainly more handsome than her best friend, a Troll, whose name is now forgotten. After many years and many suitors, the Troll’s jealousy overcame him, so he secretly ground up a purple mushroom into Yaga’s tea. Upon the second sip, her eyes clouded over, turned black and melted down her bone white cheeks. Enraged, she summoned her favorite crows and sent them to pluck out the eyes of every maiden in the nearest village. The Troll grew sick with anguish and so confessed, turning Yaga’s heart to iron. She took his eyes for her own, which are pitch black and have never seen the face of another friend.
